New Faculty Member to Join S&P

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies is pleased to announce that Prof. Jason Rothman (Ph.D. UCLA 2005) will be joining our faculty as Assistant Professor of Hispanic Linguistics in the Fall semester, 2010. Prof. Rothman has edited or co-edited four books and two special journal issues, published 26 refereed journal articles, and is co-editor of the journal Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism. His primary interests are L2/L3 acquisition and bilingual/heritage speaker acquisition of morphosyntax and semantics.

CASPSLP Conference -- February 4-6

The second bi-annual Current Approaches to Spanish and Portuguese Second Language Phonology conference (CASPSLP) will be held at the University of Florida February 4th - 6th, 2010. (The first CASPSLP  was held in Minnesota in 2008.) The conference aims to showcase approaches to and findings of the study of second language phonology. The presentations will include a wide range of contexts, from acquisition of Spanish phonology by English speakers to the acquisition of Portuguese phonology by Spanish speakers; from classroom-based learning to full immersion in the culture of the second language; and all other related topics. By focusing on the breadth of approaches that scholars are taking to the study of second language phonological acquisition in Spanish and Portuguese, this conference aims to represent the state-of-the-art in second language phonological acquisition.  The conference has been organized by SPS professor Dr. Gillian Lord.

5th Annual Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Spanish and Latin American Literatures, Linguistics, and Cultures -- February 25 - 27

On February 25 - 27, 2010 the graduate students of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Florida are hosting their 5th Annual Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Spanish and Latin American Literatures, Linguistics, and Cultures. The colloquium will bring together graduate students and professors from a wide variety of disciplines whose work explores the concepts of "Worlds in Contact" with thematic emphasis on the following: Language contact, transmutations of art, cities and spaces, literary and film space, globalization, bilingualism and multilingualism, race and ethnic relations, the Other / the Outsider, biculturalism, second language acquisition, picturing women's voices and silences, code-switching, memory, language change and variation, syncretism / hybridism, new technologies and literary communication, language and gender, immigration, and exile and diasporas.
The colloquium will have the distinction of featuring three outstanding keynote speakers:

Professor to Attend Renaissance Society of America

Associate Professor Shifra Armon has been awarded a CLAS Faculty Travel Grant to attend the Renaissance Society of America's conference in Venice, Italy this April. She will be delivering a paper on Violence in Early Modern Europe at the Istituto Veneto, Palazzo Cevalli Franchetti.

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies of the University of Florida is seeking a specialist in Spanish second-language acquisition for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor. New Faculty Appointments

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies is pleased to announce two new faculty appointments for AY 2009-10.

Ana de Prada Pérez, who successfully defended her doctoral dissertation at Pennsylvania State University in March, will join the faculty as Assistant Professor of Spanish Linguistics.  Her dissertation, which was directed by Prof. Jacqueline Toribio, is entitled:  Subject expression in Minorcan Spanish: The syntactic and pragmatic consequences of contact with Catalan. Ana is an expert on bilingualism and language contact phenomena.

Carina González, who received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 2007, will be Assistant Professor of Spanish-American Literature.  Her dissertation, which was directed by Prof. Saúl Sosnowski, will soon be published as a book entitled Ficciones de lo raro. Dispersion y desaparición de Juan Rodolfo Wilcock.  She is currently teaching at the University of Pittsburgh.

Grant Awarded

SPS Graduate Student Healther Kaiser has been awarded a 2009 Research Grant by Sigma Delta Pi, a national honorary society that supports the study of Spanish.  Heather will use the funds to conduct linguistic research in Uruguay.  Congratulations, Heather!

Publication Announcement

Congratulations to Dr. Gillian Lord on the publication of her book, The Next Generation:  Social Networking and Online Collaboration in Foreign Language Learning, co-edited with Lara Lomicka.  You can read more about this important new contribution at Calico.org.

Grant Awarded

Prof. Luis Alvarez-Castro has been awarded a research grant from the Program for Cultural Cooperation between Spain's Ministry of Education and United States Universities. The project entails a critical edition of Robert Brindle's memoirs, a British seminarist who witnessed the outbreak of the Peninsular War in 1808 while studying in Valladolid.

College Board Appointment

Gillian Lord has been approved by the College Board as a member of the CLEP Spanish Committee.

Letras e Letras da MPB

Charles Perrone announces the publication of Letras e Letras da MPB (Rio de Janeiro: Booklink, 2008). This is a revised, corrected edition of his book with preface by Augusto de Campos.

Humanities Enhancement Grant Awarded

Professor Luis Alvarez Castro has been awarded a Humanities Enhancement Grant. The title of his project is "The Peninsular War (1808-1814) and the Origins of Romantic Travel Literature in Spain".
